Country Song Suggests that Atheists are Bad Parents/Druggies/Murderers

Driving home from the last leg of my summer vacation, scanning through the radio stations, I heard a country song that I had never heard before. The song is called The Little Girl by John Michael Montgomery. It turns out that it was released in 2000 and was a #1 country hit but I'm not a big fan of country music so I guess it flew under my radar. Anyhow, here are the lyrics.

Her parents never took the young girl to church...
Never spoke of His name...
Never read her His word...
Two non-believers walking lost in this world...
Took their baby with them, what a sad little girl...

Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs...
Never wanted to play or give kisses and hugs...
She'd watch the tv and sit there on the couch...
While her mom fell asleep and her daddy went out...

And the drinking and the fighting...
Just got worse every night...
Behind their couch she'd be hiding...
Oh what a sad little life...

And like it always does, the bad just got worse...
With every slap and every curse...
Until her daddy in a drunk rage one night...
Used a gun on her mom and then took his life...

And some people from the city took the girl far away...
To a new mom and a new dad, kisses and hugs everyday...

Her first day of Sunday School...
Her teacher walked in...
And a small little girl starred at a picture of Him...
She said I know that man up there on that cross...
I don’t know His name but I know he got off...
Cause he was there in my old house...
And held me close to his side...
As I hid there behind our couch...
The night that my parents died.

Now if Montgomery wants to tell a story about how Jesus rides in on his unicorn and takes care of a young girl who has bad parents that's perfectly fine with me. But he specified that these parents were nonbelievers and didn't go to church and so suggests that their behavior is a result of them not believing in magical beings. Montgomery would have never been able to say two blacks, two Jews, or two muslims. This of course is because you can't make hateful remarks about a minority unless they are such a small group that you really don't have to worry about reprisals. It's unacceptable to bash someone's religious views in this country unless you are bashing the views of an atheist.

These views are dangerous because if christians truly believe that nonbelievers make bad parents, do drugs, and murder then it's rational to restrict them from parenting if possible. This could include not allowing atheists to adopt children, similar to what they are doing to homosexuals now. If they are druggies and murderers than naturally they should be made outcasts of society.

But apparently despite the intolerant message, the song is still popular. I am going to write my local country radio station and express concern that it is intolerant of other's views and that I, as a listener of their station, would not like it to be played. Hell, I'd even be up for a compromise and they could play the song, but then also play a sequel in which the new christian parents stone their adopted child because God told them to.

Of the documented serial killers, how many have been atheist? Now how many have been Christian? And now for the real question...why does everybody seem so damn surprised when they ALWAYS turn out to be Christian? Look at the BTK example for a start.

I agree with vjack. Hitler only killed the Jews becuase he was Christian. This song is Christian propaganda, and I'm glad that it is being spoken out against. Thank you Delta.

what's truly sad is that worldwide, unbelievers make up the 4th largest "religious" group (although we're not organized really), yet we're considered such a minority. There are more nonbelievers than Jews, Mormons, Shinto, Scientologists, etc., yet we're marginalized far more than any of those groups. And we just take it, for the most part.

At least we can take comfort in the fact that empirical evidence shows the exact opposite of what this song suggests.

I try not to make sweeping overgeneralizations and stereotypical comments, but this country song deserves one. The Family Guy had an episode where they stated the politically correct term for redneck was 'country music singer'. It's probably funnier when you see it in the show, but damn if they didn't nail that one. Is there any research done on why seemingly everyone in the bible belt is a country music fan and nascar lover? I mean if you're talking stereotypes, I can't think of any better than a flag-wavin', bible-thumpin', Pabst Blue Ribbon drinkin', Nascar watchin', wife-beatin', nigger and homo hatin', country music listenin', hillbilly, redneck idiot mutherfucker. Sorry, people like this get me pissed. We are way too easy on these assholes.

Just to give you an idea of what kinda numbnuts we are dealing with, here's a modest example from Alan Jackson's 'Where were you' song.

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran

The song goes on to say that how they know jesus and stuff. My only request here is, if you speak to an invisible god, you need to be institutionalized.

To a certain degree, it might be their own failure at their chosen lifestyles which makes them jealous of those living in actual Freedom way beyond they can imagine. Their grudge seems to be, how the heck are y'all so happy even though you don't accept JC. This grudge is vocalized in a lie through that song.

These radio stations ought to interview Eric Rudolph.

That way the masses will realize how sick religious extremism is.

Delta said...

Right Rick, that song bothers me too. In it he says that the greatest thing that god gave us is love, suggesting that perhaps belief is necessary to love somebody. He also says "but I know jesus and I talk to god". People who say that they talk to god really should be institutionalized. If they interpret their own thoughts as the voice of god, then if the thought of killing someone passes through their head they would be susceptible of believing that god was asking them to kill that particular person.

I love it. It's from a grand old tradition of country songs about disasters and tragedies. There are tons of 'em. They have albums full of nothing but. Like the song where the mommy leaves her sick baby home to go and drink and party, and comes back to find him at death's door. Those are even better than the ones about train wrecks, coal mine disasters and coal mine/train wreck disasters.

Ok this is a pretty simple caricature (and not my kinda country music) but it is effective story-telling. An' before y'all damn ALL country music to atheist hell (that's the "bible-belt"- just where it belongs I spose!) I gotta say Gillian Welch is the greatest musician/band (Rawlings is phenomenal) I've heard in years.
More generally: if you look outside the USA you might take some encouragement. Here in NZ less than 30% of the population "believe in god" while some 67% "believe in evolution". As an american atheist living overseas, I'm astounded at the religious craziness back home- (coupled with caring christian things like no health care and capital punishment). The western world in general and the USA seem to be moving disconcertingly out of sync.

I don't understand what everyone's problem is with this song. No where does it say that atheists are bad parents, druggies, or murderers. I am a Christian and I can honestly say that there are bad Christian parents out there too. But the point of the song is not to make athiests out to be bad people. You people act as though Christians are the bad people in this world. But the fact of the matter is, there are bad people from every religion or non-religion.
As for Delta and Rick, I have to say that someone has been telling you a bunch of bull. It is not like we actually "hear" God talking to us, we feel it. For example. This is a true story I swear. My cousin is currently serving in Iraq and he is one of the lead drivers for his troop. One day, he was driving to the next destination when he decided to take a different turn when he came to a T in the road. He does not know why he took the wrong turn because he had been driving those roads a lot. As he kept going, one of the armored vehicles behind him went the other way. As that vehicle turned on to the road, a bomb exploded underneith it. Luckily, no one was injured because it was an armored vehicle. They said if my cousin would have went that way with his vehicle, he would not be alive today.
This is a true example of how God "spoke" to someone. It is not like a voice popped into my cuz's head and said "turn right or you'll die". It was just a feeling he had in his gut and it turned out that that feeling saved his life.
Christians do not talk to God because they feel forced to. They do it because it is comforting. When all is going wrong in the world, it is comforting to know that maybe someone is listening. I wish all of you could know how it feels. I don't understand how you athiests can live without God. And as for me, I am one of the happiest people you will ever find!
My final comment is this:
I would rather live my life believing there is a God and find out there isn't, than to live my life not believing in a God and find out that there is.
Good Luck.

Why didn't your gracious god tell the person whose car flipped over to be more careful than tell your pastor to watch?

I used to do drugs, was raised Catholic. Currently I'm an agnostic. I've never been a fan of country music. I remember when I first heard this song; I liked it. I heard it on the radio again tonight (I hadn't heard it for several years) and found your blog entry by searching for some of the lyrics.

I never interpreted the song negatively. It's possible, I suppose, that the artist was implying what you've inferred, but I personally never felt that he was making a negative suggestion about drug users or atheists.

Anonymous said...

I truly am sad to hear all you atheists are offended. My comments aren't meant to provoke, but I couldn't sleep tonight because this tune was in my head. I strained my memory to recall at least some of the lyrics... I could only recall "and like it always does the bad just got worse" so I googled it and this site was the first hit. How my heart was touched as I read the lyrics... I have wondered far from God in recent months and oh how these words filled my empty soul. But then I was shocked to hear those offended! It just broke my heart to hear you people so enraged! How grateful I was to hear one believer stand boldly to defend us :-) Thankyou Well I'm certain many will be frustrated at my comment but I wish to throw my testimony in with : I know there's a God in the heavans, I love him and I know he loves. And may He grant mercy on the soul of the sorry smart alec who is (undoubtedly) gonna make a clever counter-comment

its a fucking song, pull the tampon outa your ass and get the fuck over it, yall want so much yet yall live in the country of god so get the fuck over yourselves. goddamn you people piss me off

I personaly like the song and am an atheist. Anyone who gets offended so easily, really should take a hard look at themselves. I haven't heard any thing on the news suggesting a progranda campaign against Atheist if anything I would have to say the christians in this country have been under attack for quite sometime. The Singer/Song writer is an Artist with his own thoughts and feeling which he wishes to express in the song if you don't like it go listen to some anti christian music or what ever floats your boat.

Point is...everyone's opinion is different. Because there is no fact about this song. It's all an opinion. And people are dis-ing on it because they are the ones that don't believe the same religion as the song. So there really is no point to pick on this song because of how you feel.
And you can call people Christian, you can call them Atheist or Jewish. That stuff doesn't matter. What does matter, is what is in you're heart, with God.

foolish atheist morons... this man is expresing a simple mesage that christians are tought, and practice kindness, patients, and a love for a nabor as they would love themselves! not all atheist's are drugies and murders but they are going down a dark road... enjoy hell! this girl ends up with true christians and thank God she did. a true christian dose not do drugs, has a loving home, and would certianly not kill an other human being! Foolish atheists, read the bible and see for yourselves, you can not denie the truth. i am not a country fan my self but i would listen to this song just to know that there are still some decent artists out there in this age. im not a radical, im not a racist, im a 16 year old CHRISTIAN who respects the message in this song. its not meant to demean others but show christs love through music. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever beliveth in him shalt not parish, but have everlasting life - John 3:16" Im looking forward to seeing my lord, you who are smart should do the same!

Oh my gosh, this is one of the most stupid idea's I have ever heard. It is just a sweet song that tells people about one little girl that grew up in an abusive household but one day her life changed. She could have grown up to be an abusive person herself if they didn't take her away. Also she would have never gotten saved. Those people shouldn't even have had chideren in the first place. I am very sorry for the people that don't know God, because he made everything. I cannot understand how people think that humans came from an animal. That is your belief but I really hope that you will take and interest in why Christians don't believe that and then say that it is stupid. Just please try.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the person above me. I dare you all non-believers to go to church, learn about Jesus, and acutually take and interest, and then be my guest and talk crap about everyone, don't believe in him, do what ever you want as long as you know the Christian side.

Anonymous said...

I'm an atheist who used to go to church for 14 years being a proud catholic, and simply got sick of your ghost stories. Not all Christians do this, but the ones here do nothing but make unfounded claims that jesus exists, bleh bleh bleh, no proof, atheists are jerks, bleh bleh bleh, no proof still. And don't tell me your little "bible" is proof, it's not, it's testimony. The atheists here are just offended because they are being subliminally persecuted; the christians are getting offended because they're standing up and asking for equality. To all you hypocritical jerks out there: I might go to hell, but I don't doubt that you'll be there to share it.

Anonymous said...

oh wow people... all of you... chill already. Look at the song, and analyze it carefully now. Ok, So i'm a huge friggin English SUPER DORK. Well, what is the author's MAIN point in this song? It is that the little girl "didn't know his name, but she knew he was with her the night her parents died". This little girl was able to say, "yes, I know Jesus, i've SEEN him, he was with me in my dakest hour". Now where one of the neat analytical twists is where all of you are arguing. We remember that in the beginning that this little girl's parents never took her to church, or taught her about Jesus. NOT because they're atheists, NOT because they're bad people. The point of that was to make the end, when the little girl says, "hey i know that man," a much greater and more touching impact. She didn't just imagine the God she's been taught about her whole life was being there for her, like she was always taught. It was the fact that a girl who NEVER knew God, was able to recognize that he existed in such a real presence he was able to hold her. Not this girl didn't know God because her parents were horrible and didn't teach her about Jesus. And if you really want to just look at a song without any logical analization at all, try this. Her family was away from God, and God was STILL their for her! This song's point wasn't to say bad things happen to non-believers. It is saying that God will be their for anyone, even someone who's family ignored him, and a girl who's never prayed. And please, people write about what they BELIEVE. People who don't believe in God can write songs too! In fact, our country is so afraid of being politically correct and relative that we can't even say the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE any more in schools. PLEASE! But the second any God-basher wants to sing about how God's abandoned them and He couldn't exist, it's freedom of speach and belief. But Kids can't say the pledge of allegiance in schools... It's just sad...

You guys are so stupid...it is simple, the song meant unbelievers in the one and only God...Jesus Christ...thats all...You need Jesus!

let me just say this is not really about religon at all. the fact was the parents never did anything with their child. they were always too busy doing drugs or drinking. J.M.M put in that they werent church goesers because at the end of the song when she goes to sunday school, she says that she saw jesus and that he helped her when her parents died. He wasnt trying to make it sound like christian or any religious or non religious group was at falt. i think i remember loving this song when i was younger, but not really knowing what the words meant because i was pretty little. I aso remember hearing it on the way to country usa when i was around eight and actually listening to the words. it really is a sad song about a little girl who was neglected but got through it with some help. everyone has good points to argue their debate but this is the truth. im not some cracked up little girl who has no frickin clue what she is talking about. i must say im not a real church goer, but i still know enough. and i actually know the writers so yeahh i kinda know a little bit about this song. so yes. thats it. you can think what you want but this is it.

Shut up shut up shut up!!!!!!! Seriously you have taken a simple christian-country song way too far. Its not about Jews and Hitler and relating this too it is blowing way out of porportion. Its not suggesting its telling a story Jesus isnt coming in on a unicorn you retards!!!! He happens to be very real and things like this happen all the time with christians and atheisits sometimes no matter what our beliefs we are all bad people one time or another. Actually something very similar just happened here in my hown town of Boone,NC a man took his life and his wifes and his 16 year old son is still here. And this song has alot of similarities pertaining to the lyrics of this song. Some atheisists are bad because they dont have God in there life and they are LOST! And as for you Delta and Rick even though my life has had really rough times like losing my Father and etc. you are telling a bunch of bull some people thinks its true some dont but I truley feel sorry for you because you are a hopeless lost person who will probably will end up in the firey depths of hell for an eternity. I am proud to say that I am a christian and I have been for 7 wonderful years because I am only 14. And Delta your comment "Why didn't your gracious god tell the person whose car flipped over to be more careful than tell your pastor to watch?" Because one hes not telling our pastor to watch where the heck did you get that from and these things just happen we are meant to be on this world to believe and serve him and when our time has come and we face judgement to see if our name is in the lambs book of life the faithful servant will tell us our wrongs and rights and we will either be rewarded to a etenity in heaven or hell and the way your are no your destination is hell and theres nothing I can do but pray for you. This song isnt implying what you are saying but you are too stuck up in your ways to see it differently.I was searching the lyrics to this song because I love it and it makes me cry and I came across this sight and at first it didnt mean anything but then as I started reading these comments I became appalled and disgusted. As a christain I did the right thing and I am happy that I took the time to voice my beliefs and personal opinoin. And by the way people who talk to god should not be institutionillized because God has spoke to me and he has probably tryed to speak to you but you choose not to listen.God is the best thing in my life hes always there and coming froma 14 year old girl this has to be deep I wish you all the best and ,maybe you will realize what I say is true because when I die I know where I am going ....do you?
Sincerely, Kristin

I think this post is rediculous. Where in the song does it say, "And just like ALL atheist parents, these two drank, did drugs, and murdered people?" Are you denying there are druggies and murderers out there? The only point the song has to pointing out that they never went to church was to increase the final impact of the young girl recognizing Jesus on the cross. It wouldn't be the same if they said, "I know that's Jesus from my old church, but I saw him once, you know." It's just a song.

okay so, i'm a southern christian, and i believe in god, but i really don't care what anyone else believes b/c it's there right to believe whatever they so choose. anyway, i don't think you all should be putting down this song. I don't think he intended to make you feel the ways that you feel. Also, shouldn't you all be putting down rap songs or something? They openly talk about sex, drugs, drinking, shootings, and more. They talk about those things as if they are normal. How come no one cares about that. Instead you are wasting your time on a country song that is like all country songs. Country music is almost always religious! What did you expect? for this to be any different. If you don't like country for that reason, then i guess country isn't the genre for you! Country has always been that way, I don't know what you guys expected to be different with this song!

In response to several comments: Someone said there is no proof of God so I am guessing they have not looked around. God is in nature and the whole universe. As soon as you open your eyes, you cannot help but see His presence in the world. Also, no one kills because they are Christian. The word Christian means to be Christ-like. No one can be perfect, but Jesus instructed us to follow Him. We are to try to be like Christ and we are forgiven when we mess up. Killing is not an act that comes from God. Just because someone claims to be a Christian does not mean they are. What is in the heart is between God and that person. God does not tell anyone to kill or do any evil act. I get so tired of people looking at Christians as though they are to be perfect. It is impossible for anyone to be perfect. Everyone messes up, everyday. I am also disgusted that someone on here claiming to be a Christian had such a potty mouth. If you are a Christian, you should be ashamed. Christ never spoke in such a way and those words you spoke are the very actions that turn others off to Christianity. For those of you who claim to be athiest/agnostic, I am sorry. I would bet that the negative influence of Christians (me included)have contributed to that. Word to all of you though, children are in God's hands and protected from hell, but as soon as someone is capable of understanding Scripture and what God has done for us, we are on our own. God allowed us to make our own decision on whether to accept or reject His Word, we are of age and accountable for our own actions and cannot blame them on anyone else, not even another Christian. He will not force us to believe in Him but the Bible shares what will happen to us if we reject Him. We can either live in Heaven with Him or choose Satan and spend eternity in Hell. I agree with "Anonymous" who said she would rather believe than not. What would it hurt. At least with believing, many try to live moral, decent lives. But remember, God will judge us Christians on Judgment Day for our actions and negative influences on the lost. Hearing so many of your responses saddens me. Thank you for the one atheist who defended Christians saying we are persecuted so much and have to fight so much for our freedom. I pray you all find Christ.

Yall are makin me mad. you took the song the complete wrong way it might say they are non beleviers but its not saying thats why they do drugs and are acholics. its main point is that they didnt even care about the girl because they were so caught up in there lives. i have no problem with atheists if thats what you want to be than thats fine it a free country you can so dont get mad at us for beleving in god. this is what is wrong with this country we have people that hear or see something and immdietlly try and find something racists with it.there are so many sterotypes who dont even know usbut talk bad about about us. what the hell is wrong with singing about god. im sure the rest of yall listen to music that talks about them personlly do drugs or havin sex or there hoes and sluts. now tell me how that is ok to listen to but when they talk about how a girls parents who dont give a crap about her is so bad. damn it quit tryin to find somethin wrong with everything in the world and let people belive what they want to beileve and let peolpe sing about what the want to singin about because its a FREE country and we can. i dont hate non beleivers or jewish peoople or what ever you beleve in i have nothing wrong with that its just when you sit there and try to find something wrong whith everything but what i do hate are sterotypes.

Ok,
People, please stop the auguments on both sides. No one will win in the long run with these issues.
We are all entitled to our beliefs, be it non-belivers or believers.
Stop bashing Christians or non-believers. There is one power, and
I'm not sure which, might be the
power of the universe and no not the spegetti monster.
I believe in doing the best you can
during your lifetime on this planet, be fair to people, even thought you may disagree. Show compassion when needed and forgiveness when necessary.
There will always be those who will disagree, regardless.
As far as the issues regarding
homosexuality, I'm not sure myself.
I don't have any answers why it exists.
I do however have my opinions and
I'm not advocating the lifestyle by any means, period.
I have several members in my family
that are gay and have been beaten up, almost killed because of what they are.
They wern't hitting on people, etc,
they were singled out because of what they, are, or choose to be.
In the 62 years of my life, I've seen a lot of things happen, many very negative. Especially when I found out I have Herpes 1 and 2 since probably when I broke up with a lady back in 1984. It has been devastating since. I have a hell of a time with the rejection.
I tried the gay thing and it did'nt work out, damed near got killed, not to mention another STD
that was cured.
One experience was very unuasual.
I was in my early 20"s and sat next to a gentleman in a bar, not a gay bar, who was not gay and by accident touched my right arm against his left arm and I though WTF?
Just like electricity between us.
His response, don't say anything,
period. I'm married with three children. We both left the bar, of
course never saw one another again.
One of a kind experience, I believe?
Well, I do pray to a higher power
and will for the rest of my life if people like it or not.
In regards to my female cousin, I have written this small note.
I do apologize to the Religious Community, I believe do to scripture, hatred toward gays prevails in our society and will for years to come.
People "choose to believe or not believe.” It’s written.
Do you think for one minute, an individual would choose such a life style full of rejection from family, friends, employers, and yes, churches for the remainder of their lives, not to mention having their asses kicked and killed.
Who in their right mind would want to live with this stigma?
Not many of you. I presume most of the readers are not gay.
Well, I will tell you a few facts about people of difference.
Yes, you can hear "it" in their voices. Yes, you can see it in their physical features. Yes, in their "walk,” their “presence” their “faces.”
And, please folks, don’t deny you haven’t noticed such things in your lifetime.
What the hell do you think “it” is? You think it is a “choice?”
Satan running wild?
I don't. People are born with specific traits, if you like it or not.
This is a fact of life. I believe the "gay" issue has some genetic links, although it "STILL HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN."
I believe this keeps the arguments going.
Yes, some gays are not bothered by this issue. Call them a f-g,
and you might get you a-s kicked. Yes, some of you are probably
thinking, a gun would fix the problem?
Next time you see one of "them," thank your genetics for your love of the opposite sex, your
children and family unit.
Remember, if is it proven to be genetic, would you have the gene removed before the baby is born?
I hope before the end of my life, there will be answers.

Please excuse the typos. Word does not always paste or act correctly.

BA,
You have your feelings and for people to pick the song apart is,
I think stupid.
Like you said, it is a song.
If people believe, then so be it.
You have your faith and in so your
belief.

I find it very hard to believe that a song with a message as strong as this one is turned into a religion battle. this song does not, in any shape or form, suggest anything about religion. The message is loud and clear, in our time of need, He who has sacrificed so much for each of us, is there. I think it is a big mistake taking God out of this world, Just like it is someones right to not say the pledge of allegiance, it is my right to say it. If you feel so strongly against it, step out of the room or just turn off the radio, don't try to impose on my constitution.

Anonymous said...

The song is not suggesting that Atheists are bad parents, It is suggesting that if you are on drugs that you are not suit to be a parent. When you are on drugs your in a state of mind that is out of your own. This song hits real close to home with me because almost the exact story happened in my family. My cousin was a druggie and he killed his wife and then killed himself while his daughter was in the house. He was a Christian, but there is a difference between being a Christian and being a firm believer in Jesus and having a relationship with Jesus. Jesus came and died for our sins and we should be nothing but grateful for that. He is my closest friend and I have a deep relationship with him. My cousin did not. He thought that going to church and believing in God is all you had to do. He was sadly mistaken. We do not have to do anything really, God doesn't need us. We need him. We were designed to Worship him and to live our lives for him and when we choose not to do that we fill that empty void with something else and in his case it was drugs which made him loose his mind and eventually his life. Just because you are atheist doesn't make you a bad person. I know some people who are some of the greatest people in the world and they are atheist. You are bending the words of this wonderful songs to make it say something that its not. It sounds to me like your using it to try to make people feel sorry for atheists. Guess what? Christians are just as bashed on as you guys are... (as you can see you were bashing on Christians.. but you don't want to be bashed on?!? sounds like a hypocrite to me) Oh and Jesus is not a "magical being" he was a person who died for me and you and lives forever in heaven and when I die I have no doubt that I will be living there with him. What you said about druggies and murderers being outcast of society is not entirely true, I think they just need some professional help to get them back on track. They are just people who are lost and they need help. Why make them outcasts, that will just make it worse.

Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me."
When Jesus comes back every single person on this earth (even you) will bow before him.. and if it takes you that long to see that he is the one and only then I'm truly sorry that you didn't find the one who makes my life whole and could make your life whole as well.

serving him,
SB

Well I think what you are saying about this song is completely insane. Look at people who are athiest!... Most of them, I'm not saying all, but most are not normal. If you think about all of the evil people in the world and the horrible things they have done I could honestly say they are all athiest for the most part. Religion gives people a sense of right and wrong. It is something that people live for. This song shows that since the parents did not believe in god they did not have any examples to live their lives by. It does not say they are bad people. Just that they were on the wrong path and that with god in their lives things could have been alot better for them. If you don't like this song then good for you, don't listen to it. But this song is a country song. Country songs are mostly christian, not atheist! I think that this song was intended for a christian audience which is practically everyone!! I am sixteen and though I don't go to church every sunday and things I still consider myself a strong believer in god. I read the bible and I pray. Obviously you dont do these things. If you did you too would beleive, you would just have the feeling that it was true. You must be athiest to actually complain about this song, which I find touching and emotional. I don't think atheists are bad people just not on the correct path to being happy. And I don't think the song was intended to offend people who dont beleive in god. Having that said, your concerns are a bunch of rubbish. You need to grow up and find better things to worry about.

HELLO

MY NAME IS PEGGY. IT HURTS ME DEEPLY TO SEE THE FOUL LANGUAGE AND DISRESPECT SHOWN BY SOME ON THIS BLOG. OUR FOREFATHERS CAME TO AMERICA FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. WE ARE ALL FREE MORAL AGENTS. OUR CHOICES DETERMINE OUR DESTINIES. THERE WILL BE NO ATHEISTS IN HELL. ALL WILL BE BELIEVERS AT THAT POINT. AS SAID BY JOSHUA,"CHOOSE YOU THIS DAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE. AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD."

I'm a christian,my best friend is an atheist, but i don't see her any differnt because of whom she does or does not believe in.

THIS IS AMERICA and if you don't remember we have these little things called RIGHTS stated in the Bill of Rights. It has all the amendments and the first one is.....
FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!!!
which means everyone is entitled to opinions...no one here is right or wrong. you can't make someone believe in something or someone.

well thats all i have to say.
it was just to the people getting all mad about these people being atheist or christian.
:] goodbye.

Hitler was not a christian. He was a pagan. He didn't slaughter the Jews in Germany because "that's what Christians do". He was an evil megalomaniac trying to build a master race.
What I don't understand about atheists is why you care what other people believe. You do the same thing that you complain about Christians. You try to convert everyone else to your way of thinking. People are FREE to believe whatever they wish. It is a personal choice. So get over yourself. If enough people were like you songs and movies about God would not make any money and people would stop making them. So you are the minority. Where that label proudly, then shut the fuck up and keep your asinine opinions to yourself.

that is complete crap. personally, i'm christian and strong in my faith, but i have many friends who are not and a few who are firm atheists. they're just people, no better no worse than any others. religion HAS been a force of evil in the past. it gives people something to live for, but also something to kill for. the crusades and the witch hunts spring to mind. most of the people involved thought they were doing god's will. that does not make whay they did any less monsterous. your personal feelings are not something that i can change by a simple post, so i'll merely suggest that instead of spewing hate you live what you claim to believe and TURN THE OTHER CHEEK!

sheesh! Gandi had it mostly right when he said, "i like your Christ. I do not like your christians, they are so unlike your Christ."

I totally agree! I heard it for the first time yesterday in MY car and my friend decided to turn up MY radio to listen to this great song...FACT: she knows I'm an Athiest and does it anyways. But, being that I am a good person, I let her do it anyways without getting pissed off to her face. It truely annoyed the hell out of me, one, that a country station would play that song that could cause controversy, two, my friend would do it anyways.

first of all hitler wasnt a christian and anyone who believs that bull is no better than him.Hitler had no religion and killed jews because his mother's doctor was a jew and when the doctor couldnt cure the disease, he blamed the jews. That wasnt the only thing that contributed, but it was a large part of it. Second of all this song says two unbelievers because their is a line about being lost in this world, and without Christ, we are lost. It isnt saying that only unbelievers do bad things, its saying that those two were lost in this world. Its HIS SONG SO SHUT UP ABOUT IT. he can write what he wants in his song, if you guys are petty enough to not be able to take his views of athiests, then you must be pretty trouble by those views.I read half of the comments on hear and was asking myself if these were a bunch of adults, or 17 year olds. and vjacks comment isnt fair. Look at how many terrorists are muslums, and how many are mennonites. HMM?

I couldn't even read anymore than a few sentences in the last sentence of the original blog. The song is fiction if any of you were wondering. And it was about 2 people not the whole population of atheists. Which is about as intelligent of a comparison as all christians with serial killers... wow. Regardless of what your beliefs are, 92% of this country is christian. Not all good people. Nor are all atheists bad. Country music is based on real people and what this country is made of. You are in the minority. I do know for a fact that each and everyone of you, in a moment like the one behind the couch (described in the song), will not be alone. Regardless of what you believe. Blessings.

I can't tell when this blog was last commented on,and I'm probably not getting back on here to see if anyone writes back to this comment, but I would like to say that I am a christian, but I understand how an atheist could interpret this the wrong way. I think the only he pointed out her parents were atheists was so she hadn't seen a picture of Jesus before she saw him later for association purposes. But I'm also highly offended at the christians who posted comments using vulgar and hateful language against atheists. That's why no one wants to join our religion, guys. You should be ashamed.

Stupid, lazy, city-slickers. Who do you think grows all that food you eat every day? REDNECKS. Who do you think drills for the oil and refines the gasoline for your car, bus, or train? REDNECKS. Who has the guts to butcher the cows for your delicious steaks, makes the leather for your $200 shoes and $500 bags? REDNECKS. Who makes up the overwhelming MAJORITY of the volunteer Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard who protect your chicken$#!+ liberal city-slicker a$$es all day and night? REDNECKS. So shut the heII up and quit your b/s bitching.. I could go on all day trying to teach you birdbrains. Why waste my time?

I am a Christian and I conceder myself a redneck. Just because one song has upset you, you shouldn't paint all Christians/country folk with the same brush. In this song, he is simply saying that THESE people didn’t go to church. Don’t give him a bunch of flack because he thinks that makes people more susceptible to performing the actions described in this song. The song is supposed to more about how Jesus is always there, in everyone's life, even the ones who don’t know his name. We live in America where we are aloud to speak our mind. That means EVERYONE gets a chance to say what they feel like. If this artist feels like saying these words, he has the right to. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it but don’t sit there and say that he doesn’t have a right to say what’s on his mind.
